Protecting animals has been an integral part of the author's life, so when she came upon an injured cat at the University in Tehran, she had to take action. Since animals are not treated with the same reverence in Iran as in the United States, Ms. Dadashi had to deftly work around cultural barriers. She learned these skills at an early age from her European mother, who shines as a compassionate role model in the second chapter, "Hassan and Claude." The last two chapters reflect Ms. Dadashi's experiences in America and how women there handle romantic relationships and chance encounters.
